The LEED Gold Experiential Learning Commons (ELC) at the University of Toronto is a dynamic hub designed to support student wellness, professional growth, and direct connection to the private sector. Located at the heart of Toronto’s innovation corridor, the LEED Gold-certified interior blends biophilic design with state-of-the-art infrastructure to foster meaningful engagement between students and leading employers across the GTA.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese gardens, the space is carefully composed to promote calm, focus, and clear communication—with whisper-quiet acoustics, natural textures, varied lighting conditions, and flexible zones for working, presenting, and meeting. Sustainability strategies—including WaterSense fixtures, high-STC materials, and a CFC-free HVAC system—were intentionally chosen to enhance health and comfort, showing how environmental performance directly supports well-being. The project’s award-winning lighting design, developed in collaboration with Alula Lighting Design, was recognized by the Illumination Engineering Society (IES) with an iNOVA Award for its ability to elevate mood, support circadian rhythms, and create a sense of warmth and belonging within a high-performance academic setting.
